Lent is a time of renewal in which we highlight three practices in our lives—fasting, almsgiving (giving), and prayer.  Ultimately Lent is about preparing ourselves to receive the outpouring of God’s mercy found in his life, death, and resurrection.  It’s about accepting God’s unconditional love without condition.

Lent is a time of renewal preparing for Easter when we celebrate and proclaim our salvation through the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. During these forty days, we remember the 40 days of the flood, the 40 days that Moses walked to the Hill of Horeb, and the 40 days that Jesus fasted in the desert. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, when we are marked with ashes and told to repent and believe in the Gospel. Just like the Prodigal Son (Luke 11, 32), so we are called to return to the Father. We are called to reflect on our lives, to correct our ways, and to renew ourselves. Lent is a time of silence to be able to listen to God's call.

Three Lenten practices—fasting, almsgiving, and prayer—give us the opportunity to be humble before our creator, to not live so fast and to take time to listen to God in moments of silence, and to get rid of everything that it stops us to carry the light of Christ in all we do.

There are two aspects of Lent, one individual and the other, community when together we support each other in our journey. Our parish offers many opportunities to help us pray, learn, and serve during this Lenten season. We have featured many of these opportunities and resources on this website.

May our hearts be open to the Lord as we walk together to grow as disciples of Jesus.

Pastoral Care

  • In a special way, we invite you to pray for parishioners who are home bond this season and not able to join us physically for worship.  Our clergy and visitation ministers will be visiting parishioners The weekend of March 8th and throughout Lent assuring them that through prayer we are united in Jesus Christ.

Almsgiving

Our almsgiving flows from our prayer, our relationship with God.  May this Lenten season hold special meaning as you generously share your blessings with others.

  • CRS's Operation Rice Bowl

  • St. Vincent de Paul Center

    • Pray: for the many dozens of families who arrive seeking groceries. Pray also for the Center volunteers.

    • Fast: in solidarity with the over 30 thousand people who are food insecure in Ottawa County.

    • Give alms: donate to our St Vincent de Paul Center or another local charity that serves the poor. Put non-perishable food items in the gray bin in the Gathering Space or donate financially.

Fasting

Fasting is a way we can step out of the norm of our day and recognize all God gives us.  It also reminds us of all those who go without.  Because of this, there are two regulations that Catholics are called to observe throughout Lent.  They are listed below.

Other

  • The Knights of Columbus will host a fish fry on all Lenten Fridays from 4:45–6:30 p.m. Choose between dine-in and takeout options. This is a great way to participate in our parish community while abstaining from eating meat on Fridays. Find more details at kofc7115.org.
