Congratulations! You may be awaiting the birth of your child, have a newborn, or have a child who is several months or years old.  No matter the stage of parenting you are currently in, you have been entrusted with a great gift from God.  In your role as parent, you will serve as the first and most influential teacher of your child's faith (among other things).  St. Francis de Sales seeks to help you in this role through weekly celebration of the Mass and offering the Sacrament of Baptism.

Baptism is “the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments” [Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213].  The liturgy of Baptism invites you to think about the hopes and dreams you have for your child and the values you want to communicate to him or her in everyday life.  These hopes, dreams, and values are expressed in the choices you make as a parent, the traditions you foster in your family, and the habits and interests you cultivate in your child.  This rite, or set of ritual actions, celebrates the beginning of your child's life as a child of God and member of the Church.  It affirms your own commitment to the faith and your promise to be your child's first catechist, being the first to hand on the faith to him or her by your Christian example.  It also affirms the church's commitment to offer you and your child support in each of your roles.

Baptism Celebration

We typically celebrate baptisms Saturday mornings in the church at 11:00 am with one or more children to be baptized and their families.  The service is done outside of Mass and is called a "Liturgy of the Word with Baptism."  The priest or deacon will lead the service which will include scripture, prayers of the faithful, and the liturgy of baptism.  We typically have one celebration in English (second Saturday) and one in Spanish (fourth Saturday) per month.

In special circumstances, we do celebrate baptisms during weekend or daily Masses.  Requests for baptism during a weekend or daily Mass can be made through our Ministry of Engagement.

We typically do no celebrate baptisms during the Seasons of Advent nor Lent.  Families can schedule their child's baptism after registering and completing the preparation requirements.  See below for more details.

Registration, Process & Requirements

In order to best prepare parents for this important role, we offer an extensive yet concise preparation process.  Please review the requirements below and the subsequent details.  We encourage parents to plan at least three months in advance to attend the appropriate sessions as we cannot and do not guarantee that a baptism can be possible in a shorter amount of time (emergency exceptions are reviewed on a case by case basis).  If you have any questions, we encourage you to contact our parish office at 616-392-6700.

  1. Parents Register for the baptism preparation process (online form or contact the parish office) - the parish will be in contact with you about scheduling the next step. (Note: We require a copy of your child's birth certificate or official documentation of your child's legal name, names of both parents, and city/state/country of birth - can be a picture of the original)
  2. Parents Meet with baptism minister one-on-on (about 30 minutes via online video chat)
  3. Parents (& godparents when possible) participate in our an online course (there is a cost for the course ~ $10) (exempt if already attended in the last three years) (about 2 hours)
  4. Parents Meet with baptism minister one-on-on (about 45 minutes via online video chat) as a follow up to the baptism session (exempt if already attended in the last three years)
  5. After the one-on-one session, parents contact the parish office to schedule baptism.
  6. Often parents ask about giving a gift to the parish in honor of the occasion; we suggest a $50 to $100 donation which can be given at the time the baptism celebration is scheduled.  Donations help support our ability ot offer this and other ministries.

At least one parent should be fully initiated in the Catholic Church (have been baptized, prepared to receive the Eucharist, and been confirmed).  We have this policy as we want to best ensure the intentions of the parents are to raise the child to be baptized in the Catholic faith.  Parents who are not fully initiated are encouraged to contact the parish office to discuss what could be done in order for the child to be baptized.

In addition, we encourage all parents to be active members of the parish.  If not already, we would be happy to discuss with you the ways of becoming active in our shared community at St. Francis.

Baptism Session

St. Francis de Sales offers a preparation session for prepare parents and godparents to help them better understand the commitment involved with baptizing their child and the liturgical celebration as well as engaging parents in discussion on what Christian parenting entails.  More details will be given during the one-on-one meeting.

Godparents

Godparents play a vital role in the faith of a child.  A godparent is a fully initiated Catholic who is in good standing with the church and is over the age of 16.  The godparent(s) represents the Catholic Church at Baptism and serves as a role model throughout the child’s life by living a fully Christian life.  For more information about selecting a godparent and/or the roles of godparents, please see the following links/articles:

Requirements/Restrictions - To ensure that a godparent is capable of their responsibilities, Church law states that the godparent be at least 16 years old (for maturity’s sake), fully initiated (having received Confirmation and Eucharist), be someone other than the legal parents, and one who leads a life in harmony with the Church. All this may seem like quite a bit, but the purpose is to ensure that the rich and beautiful faith of the Church is passed on to your child in the most loving and authentic way possible. There are usually two godparents, but only one is required.  As per Canon Law, only one godparent can be male and one female. If the second person is not a Catholic, they can serve as a Christian witness.  They must have been baptized in another denomination - they cannot be a baptized Catholic who is not practicing the Catholic faith. While this person is referred to as a Christian Witness, his/her role in the rite of Baptism is very similar to the Catholic godparent.

¡Felicidades!
