About the Easter Season

Most of us think of Easter as one day—a day when we eat lots of candy eggs, visit relatives, and maybe even have an Easter egg hunt. But the Church wants us to celebrate Easter for 50 days, although not with continuous candy-eating and egghunting!

The Ascension of the Lord

Traditionally the Church has celebrated the feast of the Ascension of the Lord on a Thursday, exactly 40 days after Easter. This day, May 17 this year, was chosen because Scripture tells us that the Ascension of Jesus took place 40 days after Easter. St. Luke writes in the Acts of the Apostles: “He presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God” (1:3).
