For many families, living the faith is limited to Mass on Sundays and maybe a prayer before a meal. Others are taking intentional steps to grow in faith as a family through our parish's discipleship process by participating in our programming. With programs like our Alpha Sprouts Family Program and Tuesday night Family of Faith, parents and children are delving into the depths of their faith together.
Every Wednesday for 10 weeks, parents and children eagerly gather at St. Francis de Sales Parish's lower level for "Alpha Sprouts." This program is a vibrant part of the community, where families explore the Kerygma - the core message of salvation in Jesus Christ. Through engaging activities and discussions, parents and children are nurtured in their faith and learn how to apply it in their daily lives.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday nights, families arrive at Corpus Christi after busy days of school and work. They come with a hunger to explore new topics of the faith, using Sophia Institute’s A Family of Faith books based on Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Equipped with the parish’s new Bibles, they learn how to delve into the Word of God together and pray with the Scriptures.
Ricardo Valdez, Director of Evangelization, emphasizes the importance of these programs: "They're not just about learning facts or stories, but about experiencing the living God who continues to speak to us today through the scriptures and prayer. These programs are about growing as a family in faith, about sharing in the joy and challenges of the journey together."

The families participating in these programs express their gratitude for growing in their faith together. In year-end evaluations of the 2022-23 year, parents expressed end results for their family life of faith such as “praying and reading the Bible more” as well as comments such as “I really enjoyed this experience, sharing with other families and children, to know a little more and knowing our Lord.” Susan Bippley, Coordinator of Family Ministry, highlights the fruits that she has seen in this transition to family-based programming: “With this approach, we are helping parents to hone the necessary tools for their own domestic churches. It is a privilege for me to witness the Holy Spirit at work as parents and children huddle over a Bible or prayer sheet; or as parents pray over their children; or as families make plans for how to live out our liturgical seasons in their homes.”
We are also seeing more participation from fathers, which is great. In the past, in previous programs, fathers might drop off their children, but they often weren't actively engaged in their children's faith life much less having important discussions around topics of the faith and reading scripture with them. Now they are sitting shoulder to shoulder reading the scriptures together, learning about our faith, and sharing their stories.
With the financial support of the Corpus Christi Foundation, these programs have been enriched with the funds to purchase of both English and Spanish children's Bibles designed for families to use together. Many of our parish families consist of parents whose primary reading language is Spanish and children whose primary reading language is English, so it has been important to supply both English and Spanish Bibles for our families to read together.
As the families of St. Francis de Sales continue their faith journey together, they are reminded of the often-quoted phrase:
"The family that prays together stays together."
May this bond of faith continue to strengthen and grow, building up the Kingdom of God right here in Holland.

Otros están dando pasos intencionales para crecer en la fe como familia a través del proceso de discipulado de nuestra parroquia, participando en nuestros programas. Con programas como nuestro Programa Familiar Alpha Sprouts y Family of Faith los martes por la noche, los padres y los niños se sumergen juntos en las profundidades de su fe.
Cada miércoles durante 10 semanas, padres e hijos se reúnen ansiosos en el sótano de la parroquia de San Francisco de Sales para "Alpha Sprouts".
