New Home for Our Priests | Nuevo Hogar para nuestros Sacerdotes

While the mission of our parish, to grow passionate disciples, remains constant, exactly how that is accomplished changes and requires certain updates. Through the years the housing needs of our parish clergy have changed. The time has come again for a change in location for our parish rectory.

I have fond memories of my days as an Associate Pastor living in the old rectory located on the SW corner of Maple and 12th. It was nice to live in the parish neighborhood and to walk to church and the office. After the rebuilding of the Church, my predecessor Fr. Steve Dudek and the parish Finance Council made the decision to sell that rectory. With the prospect of only one priest into the foreseeable future and added financial constraints caused by the new mortgages, it was no longer a practical option.

I have lived in the current smaller rectory for the past 17 years. Through those years, I lived alone except for occasional missionary priests. Seven years ago, that happily changed when our parish began to receive Associate Pastors. Currently, besides myself and Fr. Kyle, we have David our seminarian intern with us as well as Fr. Nick staying two nights a week during Hope’s academic year. Frankly, the rectory has become too small.

This “problem” reflects the many good things that are taking place at Saint Francis. We have the trust of the Bishop to send us newly ordained priests and seminarian interns so that our parish will continue as a site for formation of the clergy of our diocese. The flourishing work of the St. Benedict Institute at Hope College with their full-time chaplain is another contributing factor.

Three years ago, I first shared my concern about the rectory with Bishop Walkowiak. More than a year and a half ago he gave us his blessing to look for a larger place closer to the parish. Most unexpectedly, we were blessed with a significant donation for this purpose as well. I am happy to share with you that we have found a new home only four blocks from the parish. The good news is that with the donation we have received, along with the proceeds from the sale of the current rectory we will have to spend very little, if anything, from parish savings.

I am excited about living in our neighborhood again. Of course, moving is not something fun to do, especially after living in the same home for so many years. The mission of our parish is the same no matter the address of our rectory, and the added space, proximity to the parish and having housemates to help me will make it worth it!

A través de los años, las necesidades de vivienda de nuestros sacerdotes han cambiado. Ha llegado nuevamente el momento de cambiar la ubicación de nuestra rectoría parroquial.

Tengo buenos recuerdos de mis días cuando yo era un vicario viviendo en la antigua rectoría ubicada en la esquina de Maple y 12th. Fue agradable vivir en el vecindario parroquial, caminar a la iglesia y a la oficina. Después de la reconstrucción de la Iglesia, mi predecesor, el Padre Steve Dudek y el Consejo de Finanzas de la parroquia tomaron la decisión de vender esa rectoría. Con la perspectiva de un solo sacerdote en el futuro previsible y las restricciones financieras adicionales causadas por las nuevas hipotecas, ya no era una opción práctica.

seminaristas recién ordenados para que nuestra parroquia continúe como un sitio para la formación del clero de nuestra diócesis. El floreciente trabajo del Instituto St. Benedict en Hope College con su capellán de tiempo completo es otro factor que contribuye.

Hace tres años, primero compartí mi preocupación sobre la rectoría con el Obispo Walkowiak. Hace más de un año y medio nos dio su bendición para buscar un lugar más grande más cerca de la parroquia. De manera inesperada, fuimos bendecidos con una importante donación para este propósito también. Me da mucha alegría compartir con ustedes que hemos encontrado un nuevo hogar a solo cuatro cuadras de la parroquia. La buena noticia es que con la donación que hemos recibido, junto con los ingresos de la venta de la rectoría actual, tendremos que gastar muy poco, en todo caso, en los ahorros de la parroquia.

Estoy emocionado de vivir en nuestro vecindario nuevamente. Por supuesto, mudarse no es algo divertido, especialmente después de vivir en la misma casa durante tantos años. ¡La misión de nuestra parroquia es la misma sin importar la dirección de nuestra rectoría, y el espacio adicional, la proximidad a la parroquia y tener compañeros de casa para ayudarme harán que valga la pena!
