The Feast of St. Francis de Sales falls on Wednesday, January 24th this year. As our parish Feast day, we have the option of also celebrating it during weekend Masses. Therefore, we will be celebrating our parish Feast day at all Masses on Saturday and Sunday, January 20-21, 2024. As part of our celebration cookies and punch will be served in the gathering space after the 10:30am and 12:30pm Masses on Sunday, January 21st.

Prayer to St. Francis de Sales
O Blessed Francis, who in your life did excel in all virtues, especially in your love of God and of your neighbor, I earnestly ask you to take me under your immediate protection, to obtain from God my perfect conversion, and that of all sinners.
Teach me, O Father, to fix my eyes on heaven, that I may generously trample under foot every obstacle that presents itself in my way, and attain that degree of glory which you in your mercy hold out to me.
Obtain also the favor for which I now pray: (mention your request here).
Assist us O Lord, we beseech you, through the merits of St. Francis de Sales that, what our endeavors cannot obtain may be given to us by his intercession.

This brief history of St. Francis de Sales Church was drawn from materials provided by the Reverend Dennis W. Morrow, archivist of the Diocese of Grand Rapids. For more than 100 years, St. Francis de Sales Church has sustained and inspired the people of God in Holland, Michigan. But long before the first Dutch settlers arrive, the Catholic faith was celebrated in the area that would come to be known as Holland.
During the 1670s, Father Jacques Marquette, the famous French missionary, is believed to have visited the Ottawa Indians camped along Lake Macatawa where the H.J. Heinz plant is now located.
When Albertus Van Raalte and his followers arrived in 1847, they found the Reverend Andreas Visosky ministering to the Native American residents of the area. The Indians relocated to avoid conflict with the Dutch, and the Catholic faith was sustained in the second half of the 19th century in Holland by a handful of families who persevered in their religion despite the absence of a church building or pastor of their own.
In 1870, six Catholic families were found in Holland, visited only occasionally by itinerant missionaries. From 1883 to 1903, Holland Catholics were visited regularly, if infrequently, by priests from Grand Haven and Byron Center- as often as once a week one year, just six times another. Mass was held in public halls or in residents’ homes.

On December 7, 1997, Bishop Robert Rose dedicated the present church-structure designed by Progressive Architects, with Elzinga & Volkers serving as general contractor and Father Mark Joseph Costello as liturgical consultant.
More change was in store the next year. In August 1998, members of St. Francis de Sales and Our Lady of the Lake joined at the corner of Quincy Street and 120th Avenue to break ground on the Corpus Chrisi Center, a jointly operated education complex that would replace the aging St. Francis de Sales School on 13th Street. The center opened in 1999, houses preschool, elementary and middle-school students, and serves as a lifelong religious education center for both parishes.

In October 1903, construction began on a 25-by-70 foot church building at the corner of West 20th street and Harrison Avenue that would be known as St. Francis de Sales Church.
Named after the 17th century French bishop who celebrated Christian devotion among the laity, St Francis began as a mission of St. Sebastian’s Church in Byron Center. A priest from that parish would drive to Holland twice a month (weekly in the summer) by horse and buggy to celebrate Mass for the 32 Catholic families, plus visiting restorers.
St. Francis would later become a mission of Holy Name Church in Wyoming and St. Joseph’s Seminary. Without a resident pastor, an active lay leadership set up catechism classes, organized devotional groups and social organizations, and kept Holland’s small Catholic community united.
The congregation grew steadily and by 1913 St. Francis had moved to its present site at 13th street and Maple Avenue, where a 60-by-68-foot building that would be used as a church- and later as a school as well- was built.
St. Francis was recognized as a parish by the bishop of Grand Rapids in 1918 and received its first resident pastor, Father George L. Nye, in 1921.
By 1924, the parish had 100 registered families and that year opened a four-room school, staffed by five members of the Sisters of Mercy. Þ St. Francis struggled financially through the Depression, but still managed to build an addition to the church that expanded its capacity to 500 people.

In the 1950s, the parish was blessed by the arrival of a growing Spanish-speaking community. A nearby Lutheran church was acquired in 1954 to serve Spanish-speaking worshippers and renamed Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos.
Eight years later, the Spanish-speaking portion of the congregation was formally integrated with the rest of the parish and a weekly Spanish Mass was added at St. Francis.
To keep pace with the growth of the parish, construction was begun in 1968 on an 800-seat brick church building, which was dedicated in 1970.
Growth continued at an accelerated pace in the 1970s and 1980s, as Holland’s economic prosperity drew new residents from around the country and around the world.
St. Francis emerged as perhaps the most ethnically diverse church in West Michigan. With the arrival of large numbers of Vietnamese refugees in the mid-1970s, regular Vietnamese Masses were celebrated at St. Francis beginning in 1977.
In 1979, St. Francis gave birth to Holland’s second Catholic parish, Our Lady of the Lake Church, located across Lake Macatawa on Holland’s north side.
Tragedy struck St. Francis on December 12, 1995, when a devastating fire started by a workman’s torch gutted the church building. The people of St. Francis were without a physical home for two years, but in sign of growing Christian brotherhood, other churches made their facilities available to the people of St. Francis for worship, most notably Hope College’s Dimnent Chapel and Third Reformed Church.
